Haa Tóoch Lichéesh is filled with gratitude to welcome back Neelaatughaa Anna Clock as our instructor for Beginning & Intermediate Lingít. Gunalchéesh language revitalization partners Discovery Southeast and KTOO for continued support of this program. We appreciate you!
In this class, we will level-up in our ability to understand, speak, and write in Lingít. We will study written speeches and recordings, practice greeting each other and speaking from the heart, and hone our cultural and linguistic fluency for a long-term goal of respectful engagement with other Lingít speakers. We will work as a team to use resources available to us and find our voices in the language. Lingit is a complex language with 58 letters and about 30 sounds that are not found in English. Four of those sounds are not found in any language in the world.
Here are some guidelines for learning the Tlingit language:
- Learn independently – Teachers can set up opportunities for learners to learn independently, such as telling a story and having learners match pictures to words in the story.
- Make mistakes – It’s important for learners to make mistakes in order to learn.
- Give everyone a chance to speak – Give everyone a chance to speak and hear everyone’s voices.
- Correct with kindness – Correct with kindness, and unless someone asks for help, don’t correct them immediately.
- Don’t be afraid – Your mistakes help you and others learn
